I bought Mughal-e-Azam posters - International designer Paul Smith

International fashion designer Paul Smith, who was in the Capital, is looking at opening his third store in Mumbai this June. Excerpts from a tete-e-tete with DNA.

Tell us about your Delhi tour...
We went to Hauz Khas village, but some of them weren’t even open. I also went to see my own shop in the mall, it was awesome. I took a lot of photographs and bought some Bollywood posters and vintage tin boxes.

What posters?
Mughal-e-Azam. It appealed to me visually paul smith luggage. I didn’t know about it, but just liked the imagery.

Are you planning to do something with them paul smith bags?
I’m not too sure what I’m going to do with them. If you see my room in London, you’ll realise that I buy things like that all the time.

Read a lot about the special room. Tell us about it.
I’ve got enormous collections of everything. I enjoy collecting anything that’s just beautiful, or awful, or cheap, or expensive paul smith wallets. I just like the mix. The graphics can be so useful for my jeans or tees. I even have around 5000 books in my room, countless CDs and robots.

It’s been described as a mess. Would ‘creative mess’ be the word for it?
Yes, it is. I tend to know where things are, which is quite cool. And I have a very big table in the middle. It’s a real mess, but I get to know if even the alignment changes.

Heard you are working on stamps for the upcoming Olympics too?
Yes, I was asked by the post office to design some stamps for the Olympics. I wanted to make some optimistic designs in cheerful colours — easy to understand, very graphic. I worked on it for almost a year. It’s a legal thing, you can’t get it wrong — there was the Olympic logo, even the Queen’s head had to be in a certain size. I didn’t understand how fanatical stamp collecting is, till I worked on this.

Is it true that you’re obsessed with rabbits paul smith uk?
It’s totally false (laughs). In the early ’80s, I was on a trip going from London to my hometown Nottingham and I was with an American friend. I was day-dreaming when he asked me why I was looking so intently out of the window? I said, ‘I’m looking for rabbits because if I see one, my collection will sell well.’ I just made that up. He sent me a papier mache rabbit when he returned to New York, and spread the word. Since then I get around 20 rabbits a week (laughs). I should have said diamonds instead of rabbits!

Brit on Brit Paul Smith and John Lobb

If Summer 2010 was all about denim on denim, Fall 2012&prime paul smith multi colour stripe bags;s big new thing is British on British &ndash paul smith sale; design houses paul smith luggage, we mean. Paul Smith and John Lobb have announced a collaboration that will see the two brands join their expertise in design and craftsmanship to create limited edition shoes paul smith tote bags.

The most intriguing part about this “marriage” of brands is the apparent clash between design philosophies adhered to by each label. John Lobb is all about the moneyed, old-world look while Paul Smith thrives in bold, adventurous creations, both in cut and colour. What in the world would the final product look like?

Well, the collaboration has already made its debut on the Paris catwalk at the Paul Smith Spring Summer 2013 show on July 1st and will be available worldwide from John Lobb stores and selected Paul Smith shops from September 2012.

The press statement says, “For act one of this new partnership, Paul Smith brings a punctuation of colour, somewhat a signature of his, to three iconic John Lobb styles, selected for both their heritage and contemporary appeal. Rather than changing the fundamentals of these fine shoes, the addition of colour respects the original understated style yet brings new life and just the right amount of fun. In menswear, a little tweak goes a long way.”

In short, all Paul Smith did to John Lobb’s shoes were do them in a bright colour that falls within the PS rainbow. This is the reason why we now have regal purple Willoughby oxfords bearing John Lobb’s signature. Yay or nay? We would pass and stick to either Paul Smith or John Lobb, but we’re sure there’s someone out there who would appreciate questionably-hued loafers.

paul smith intro 1

One of the few British-based fashion designers to combine commercial success with critical credibility, PAUL SMITH (1946-) is renowned for his idiosyncratic take on traditional British styling -'classics with a twist' - both in his fashion collections and his shops.
Paul Smith fell into fashion by accident. As a jobless 15 year-old who had left school with no qualifications, he was frogmarched by Harold Smith, his father, into a Nottingham clothing warehouse one day and forced to take a job there as an errand boy.
That was back in the 1960s. Smith, who once described himself as being "okay at design and okay at business but exceptional at neither", has since become Britain's most consistently successful fashion designer whose products are sold in over 200 shops and through 500 wholesale customers in Japan alone, where his label out-sells every other European designer.
Born in Nottingham in 1946, Paul Smith remembered his family home a few miles outside the city centre as "always very comfortable ... excellent mum, quirky dad, an always stable, good relationship" paul smith mini car bags;. When he left school at 15, his only ambition was to become a racing cyclist until his father hauled him off to the clothing warehouse. "When I look back I realise how influenced I was by Nottingham," wrote Smith years later. "I'd cycle around paul smith shoulder bags, there'd be the coal miners, Derby tweeds and the elegance of the country squires. My brother worked for the Post Office and wore that blue cotton drill GPO shirt."
During his first two years at the warehouse, Smith had no real interest in his work there except for the cycle journey to and from his home. It was only after an accident ended his dreams of becoming a racing cyclist, that he flung himself into his job. "Just by chance I met a lot of people from the art college and became interested in things like art and fashion," he recalled. "Back at the warehouse I started to make displays in the showroom ... The boss was really impressed and he gave me all the buying to do for the men's wear when I was still only 17."
When a friend from art college decided to open a fashion boutique in Nottingham, Smith found the premises, decorated them and ran the shop as its manager. By 1970, encouraged by his girlfriend Pauline Denyer, he felt ready to go it alone by ploughing his £600 savings into Paul Smith Vêtement Pour Homme on Byard Lane, a shabby back alley. The rent was 50p a week: just as well given that the first week's takings came to £52. Open only on Fridays and Saturdays, the shop was scented with Christian Dior Eau Sauvage to overpower the smell of Smith's Afghan hound. During the rest of the week, Smith made ends meet from freelance jobs as a window dresser, tailor and stylist. In the evenings, he signed up for a fashion design course.
The only shop outside London to sell labels like Kenzo and Margaret Howell, Paul Smith Vêtement also started selling the pieces that Smith designed himself and had made up by local manufacturers. Then, as now, his clothes were inspired by the traditional British men's wear he admired: everything from his brother's Post Office shirts and the tweeds of the Nottinghamshire county set, to the imported US jeans and bespoke suits in unusual blues or greens that he wore himself. "The hardest thing was justifying the name 'designer' for myself when I only made such simple clothes. I ended up designing clothes that I wanted to wear myself and felt good in. Well-made, good quality, simple cut, interesting fabric, easy to wear. No-bullshit clothing."
By 1974, the shop had outgrown its back alley and Smith moved to bigger premises on the main street. Two years later, he showed his collection in Paris for the first time and searched for a London shop, finally finding it in a tiny bakery in the then-rundown Covent Garden. "The area was completely empty at the time - there was just the tube and a fruit shop paul smith bags. It took me six months to find out who owned it, it turned out to be a retired baker ... I asked if he would sell it and he said he would for about £30,000. I went to Barclays (Bank) in Nottingham and asked if they would lend me £5,000 or £10,000, but the manager didn't like the fact that I had long hair and a red scarf, and wouldn't lend me anything. Then I went to the Yorkshire Bank in Nottingham and they lent me £10,000. My tailor lent me £10,000 and then I went to the baker and said that I only had £20,000 ... I think he lent me some and I got it for around £25,000 in the end."
Having bought the shop, Smith didn't have enough cash to do it up. Three years later he did and the tatty old bakery fittings were stripped out and the shop spruced up into a stark, elegant Le Corbusier-inspired style. As well as clothes, Smith sold quirky penknives, notebooks and pens that he picked up on his travels. His most inspired 'find' was the Filofax, a leatherbound personal organiser he unearthed at Norman & Hill, a tiny company hidden under an East London railway arch.
When the neighbouring shop came up for sale, Smith bought it. As he "didn't have the heart" to rip out the lovely old wooden fittings, he patched them up instead. The extra space was used to sell more idiosyncratic things - old Beano annuals, first-edition books and, after he began travelling to Japan in 1982, comical Japanese toys and gadgets - alongside Smith's clothes. He filled the windows with furniture by designer friends like Tom Dixon and James Dyson's G-Force vacuum cleaner. As a young designer, Marc Newson stopped by to show Smith a watch in the hope of persuading him to sell it. "Paul said: "It's a nice watch, but it's not a nice price", recalled Newson. "He was right. It was too expensive. That was an important lesson for me."
By then, Smith has coined a phrase to describe his style, 'classic with a twist'. "I take ingredients from upper-class tailoring, hand-made suits and so on, and bring them together with something silly," he explained. "So I might bring together a beautiful suit with a denim short. Or use floral prints inspired by old-fashion seed packets for men's shirts, or line tailored jackets with flamboyantly coloured silks, or ask a factory which specialises in V-necked school sweaters to knit them in crazy colours." "It is as though he possesses some inner equivalent of the Houndsditch Clothes Exchange - not a museum, but a vast, endlessly recombinant jumble sale in which all the artefacts of his nation and culture constantly engage in a mutual exchange of code," wrote the US novelist William Gibson of the Paul Smith style.
Smith has since stuck to the same formula, for both his collections and shops, as his wholesale business has expanded and he has opened more shops in Asia, the US and Europe while diversifying into everything from women's wear and watches to perfume. The shops are still filled with first-edition books like Cecil Beaton's autobiographies paul smith multi colour stripe bags, 1960s posters and quirky Japanese flea market finds: and their windows are as likely to display Apple's new computer or the latest video games system as Paul Smith clothes.
"The reason I've been successful is because I've just got on and packed boxes and I know that VAT means Value Added Tax not vodka and tonic," Paul Smith wrote in his book You can find inspiration in everything. "I've sold on the shop floor, I've typed invoices. At some point I've done everything, and I've always kept my head above water financially. Nevertheless I'm extremely nervous about becoming a businessman and not a designer."

Snow boots are specifically designed for wandering around in deep snow. And when wandering around in deep snow, as a general rule, the higher the boot (within reason) - the better. In particular, snow boots will extend well above the ankle - generally higher than typical workboot or hiking boot. The purpose of this extended height is to provide further protection against both cold and snow from entering the boot and thereby chilling the foot.
A real good snow boot will have a snow gator as part of the design. A snow gator is basically something built into the boot that prevents snow (and thus water, once it melts) from getting down in between foot and the boot.

adidas Designer Jeremy Scott Clearly Original

In the footwear and apparel industry, brands can often churn out products season after season that simply fit into predetermined "target consumer" grids or fulfill a safely-planning retailer's request.

And then there's Jeremy Scott self-titled capsule collection with adidas Originals. Always looking to push the boundaries of footwear and challenge our traditional apparel dimensions, Scott enjoys unparalleled freedom with his line season after season. Now strongly moving into his third year, his newly launched ObyO Jeremy Scott Fall 2011 assortment of offerings is no different.

A key component of the brand's new "Iconics" campaign, it's the brash creativity of Scott and the fearlessness of adidas Originals that makes the relationship so strong. Because of the continued success of the line and the instant-hit models like the Wings and Teddy Bears, Scott was once again given a clean slate to design this season as he saw fit -- he wouldn't have it any other way. As you'll notice with several pieces from the apparel silo and new sneakers including the Bones, Panda, High Top Streetball and Camo Wings, the new range is classic unabashed Scott.

Last month, I had a chance to have a candid and wide-ranging chat with Jeremy Scott from the set of the "All Originals" commercial shoot. Read ahead for more on his decade-long relationship with the brand, his approach to design and what he thinks of the love / hate response his collections always evoke.

Nick DePaula: When did you first get in touch with adidas Originals and how did the relationship start?
Jeremy Scott: I was first approached to do a project called “! S!gned,” which was about ten years ago. They asked me to work on that, and for each person involved, we were tasked to create our own shoe. There was only a hundred pairs made, and they did distribution of fifty of them and I distributed the other fifty. I did a silk jacquard money print on the Forum [seen below], and that was the first thing that we did together. From that, we did some special shoes just for my shows, and then a few years later in 2006 we did the adiColor project with the Keith Herring Foundation. After that, we started talking about working on a continuing collection for apparel and footwear.

NDP: What was it about adidas that was attractive for you?
JS: What I love about adidas is they’ve always had a really organic connection to pop culture. It’s been about music, fashion and inspiration, and it’s always been very genuine in that sense. When rave culture was all about adidas, they weren’t freaked out about it, they said, “Ok, cool!” They even realized that their vintage logo has another meaning to some people, and when Run DMC said they loved adidas, they embraced it. I think that’s what’s really important about adidas, compared to nameless brands that I won’t get into that are kind of phobic of when pop culture embraces them. As compared to trying to be something called sportswear. Of course this is a sportswear brand, and it was founded that way and I don’t think anyone would ever dispute that Adidas Jeremy Scott License Plate, but that’s what’s cool about adidas to me, is that they have this really genuine and organic feel. I&rsquo Adidas Jeremy Scott Bone;m such a kid of pop culture and it’s such an inspiration to me constantly, so for me, that’s why I work with adidas. I really believe that, and it’s so genuine and engrained.

NDP: Since you launched your first collection, it’s included both shoes and apparel adidas jeremy scott leopard. What’s been the driving force behind the apparel for the past few years?
JS: I think it’s really important to expanding the whole vision. I’m excited to be doing shoes, because that’s something I don’t necessarily do on my own. Especially sneakers, and I’ve always loved icons. But Adidas Jeremy Scott Metro Attitude Hi, of course, I really love playing with all of the iconography of the brand, like the Three Stripes and the Trefoil. I love doing new things with the cuts, and I’m also fortunate that our company has such iconic apparel that other brands don’t have. There are very, very classic things here, and I love rifting off of that constantly, like taking a staple jacket and making a whole new contraption out of it basically. That’s something that’s so apart of my design DNA in a way. To see something and alter it, and I love that I have a lot to play with here.

NDP: When you guys first started talking about the footwear collection, did you have an approach in mind? Your direction is at times more abstract than what adidas Originals would normally do, of course.
JS: To a degree, sure. They came to me and said, “Hey, here’s carte blanch to design. We love what you do and we love what you’ve done with us on these other projects.” They all became such successes that it was evident to them that I love and respect the brand, but I also take it someplace that it hasn’t been before and that they’re not doing internally. Maybe that’s because it’s such a singular, personal vision. They really just wanted me to do something that continues on our past and it went from there.

NDP: When you designed the Wings model, which is definitely a model that people have really adopted, what was the concept behind that?
JS: Well, there was a few different ideas. First of all, I wanted to do something that brought a new volume to the foot.

NDP: That’s really interesting.
JS: Yeah, and I was thinking about how I could do that, and still not impede people’s walk. How can you bring the eye to a new volume, but not make it look like a clown shoe? I was thinking about this extension, and it just naturally gravitated to me as a winged shape. From ideas of Greek statues and antiquity, to the concept of basketball players flying through the air to do a slam dunk, all of those elements came together. I had used wings in my own work in periodic places, and it was always an image that I loved as an optimistic and uplifting image that people could have a good feeling about. There’s nothing sinister about wings. [laughs] I also liked the idea of making something that could be convertible. You could take it off, but I guess nobody really does. [laughs]

NDP: Exactly. Nobody takes it off.
JS: Yeah. [laughs] But that was the thought, to just always try and create something new.
